ICC Condones Elbowing
By Tabrez Janjua for Stani Army in General Cricket, Pakistan Cricket
82 ViewsAs predicted, Chris Broad the match referee has sided with Australia after Ricky Ponting elbowed Mohammed Aamer on day one of the first Test. In a media release from the ICC, Broad said he has spoken to young Aamer explaining to him to keep out of the batsmen’s ‘personal space’.
The media release on the ICC website it states: “this was the second time in two matches that Aamer had made physical contact with a batsman”, which is absolutely incorrect. It is quite clear that Ponting made physical contact with Aamer on this occasion and not the other way around, so to suggest otherwise you would either have to be blind or deliberately biased. Apart from that clear injustice, there was no mention of Broad having a word with Ponting who was let off for elbowing an opponent on the cricket field. The Pakistanis will obviously not do anything about it because of their inferiority complex, and will continue being too bloody nice for their own good. Even a simple statement from Captain Shahid Afridi telling Ponting to act his age would suffice and would show him that he is not a law unto himself.
Broad went on to say: “there are a few things [Aamer] still has to learn in relation to how to conduct himself on the field of play”, this coming from a man whose son, Stuart Broad, has the biggest attitude problem in cricket, consistently showing disgust towards the umpires. Go have a word with him Chris.
And people wonder why John Howard’s candidature for the ICC vice-presidency wasn’t accepted by the Asian bloc?

Umar Gul’s last spell has given us a glimmer of hope. Pakistan have an outside chance now, but if they batted like they did in the first innings, just forget it. Nevertheless, an eventful day of Test Cricket with 15 wickets falling on a bowler friendly pitch.
July 14th, 2010 at 7:45 pm
And what about Shane Watson’s celebrations…. he did it with Gayle sometime back and was at it again against Umar Akmal….. blaring out his lungs like a chimp on steriods
July 14th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
@Kuram –
That’s right Kuram, but lets not bet on Chris Broad to do anything about it.
July 14th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
@Maaaaaaaz –
I was disappointed with the attitude of all the batsmen apart from Butt, Ali, Afridi, Gul, Kaneria and Asif, all of whom showed guts. Bowlers again eh?

I don’t think they would have taken the same decision if it were another team. I mean, come on, he’s a young lad, he surely doesn’t do it on purpose.
And of the elbow incident it’s probably one of the reasons why I’ve never developed respect for Ponting, the Bush doppelganger.
And the Stanis are probably going to lose very badly now.
July 15th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
@Maaaaaaaz –
Very good performance Maz. What competition was that?
July 15th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
@sunny –
He got what he deserved in the second innings though….a big fat zero.
Yes, the match situation doesn’t look good. Only the weather will save us and I was thinking of asking you to call on your mates ‘cloudy’ and ‘rainy’ for us Sunny
July 15th, 2010 at 3:06 pm
TJ
It was a club/league match in the Surrey League
At Lords, this lead is becoming unmanageable….. 378 now!
July 15th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
@Maaaaaaaz –
Yes, seems as if the bowlers lost heart. Can’t blame them though, they always seem to be bailing us out. Time for the batsmen to pay something back.
Long as we get close to the total I’m not really bothered….and not give Shane Watson any wickets.
July 15th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
My mates? I can only come over myself and now you wouldn’t want that to happen
But maybe I should ask the weather of here to come over to England..rainy and windy.

Stupid captaincy by Afridi today so far he didn’t backed up his bowlers in the field and gave easy runs to tail enders the bowlers also didn’t bowled aggressively to finish the Australian innings, I can’t believe that Afridi is bowling since last half an hour to tail enders and not using pacers from both ends. Hilfenhaus is going to score a 50.
Can’t understand why we let the initiative slip away from us by playing soft cricket, why do we change gears, these are the situations which demoralize the team and give the opposition a huge psychological advantage.
There is a visible change of tactics since this morning the field placements, the speed and movement of pacers and the bowling changes everything has been so wrong.
I think Afridi couldn’t recover from the first innings deficit and psychologically admitted defeat.
July 15th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
@sunny – #
Where’s that Sunny? I will come over immediately to get some!
July 15th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
@Wasim –
I think he bowled Asif too long. He was going at 75mph and trying to bowl bouncers?! Crazy. We just haven’t got that killer instinct. I suggested yesterday that we need to take advantage of this situation because we don’t find ourselves in it so often, but maybe that is the problem.
I definitely noticed something in the body language too. It’s crazy though because even up until the start of play this morning we were in such a good position. Their tail enders have done what our top order couldn’t. If this is what they have scored in these conditions, I fear a sunny day on a flat pitch!
July 15th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
As for today/tomorrow guys, what do you think we should do with the batting line up? Kamran at 3?
July 15th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
Stani
There is nothing wrong with this team talent wise or regarding it’s capability to win or compete.
The problem is that our players are mentally fragile, yesterday Afridi played a horrible knock probably out of anger because two of his best batsmen lost their wickets to Watson and didn’t contributed to the score.
I think if he had stayed on the wicket for 10 more overs Pakistan could have come close to Australian score but Afridi’s body language changed after Pakistan conceded a lead of over 100 runs. Even today if they had been aggressive on the field and had not spread the field and bowled aggressively they could have made a comeback in the match.
It has become a habit of our team to let the teail enders of the opposition to take the match away from us.
The captain should exhibit a never say die attitude reagrdless of whatever the position the team is in that will change the defeatist mindset of the team and will have affect the opposition also psychologically.
July 15th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
The batting order should not be changed Azhar and Amin open regularly in domestic cricket maybe Pakistan should promote Umar Akmal at #4.
The wicket has eased out also so lets pray that we don’t get any overcast conditions.
July 15th, 2010 at 8:42 pm
Belgium! But the clouds like to play tricks here, one hour they come, the other they go…typical. But I can send over a bucket of water if you like?
July 15th, 2010 at 8:55 pm
@Wasim –
Did you see Farhat’s shot on dismissal Wasim? If you didn’t then don’t watch it or you will go mad. The guy is so frustrating. The ball was so short from Smith he could have picked any spot in the ground to put it but what does he do? Smacks it right into the hands of the fielder. Not that that shot was required as we were in such a good position. If anything should demonstrate that Farhat does not have the temperament for Test cricket then it is that shot. We would have been without loss had it not been for that and the Aussies would have been demoralised.
The thing with Afridi is that had he played more carefully would there have been an increased risk of him making hardly anything? I think the manner he went about it was ok except that he should have realised he had gotten enough off that over so there was no point in going for another one. There was the mistake. I think we may have to accept him playing like this.
I have been very impressed with Azhar Ali. He will turn out to be a classy player inshaallah. Hopefully we will see more of Amin’s batting, but he has shown in the field that he is definitely a real talent. Hats off to Salman Butt for realising his responsibility and putting in such a great effort. I hope he gets the only century of the game whatever happens.
Forecast is for showers in London but the UK’s such a small Island the forecast is hardly ever reliable, although sunshine does look unlikely.
July 15th, 2010 at 8:55 pm
@sunny –
…how about you send some chocolate instead?
July 15th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
Farhat’s shot was utterly ____. But then I’m sure the captain will outdo it.
If it’s sunny tomorrow, all they’ll have to do is wait it out. The wicket is a dead as a really dead thing and if the clouds are gone the bowlers may be fairly helpless. None of them are Dale Steyn after all.
July 15th, 2010 at 11:04 pm
Now I guess it should be very clear to some people on why we needed Fawad Alam instead of Imran Farhat in the squad
July 15th, 2010 at 11:09 pm
forgot to mention fawad alam is considered to be such a bad performer that he is not selected for even Pakistan A squad …. salute to our idiot selectors
….. I guess Farhat will for sure be dropped from the second test after Afridi’s statement that we should get rid of mediocre players who have been part of the team for sometime … I hope this father in law doesnt pull any strings (if there is any left after today’s performance) !!
July 16th, 2010 at 12:05 am
@Roamer –
When did Afridi make that statement Roamer? During this match?
Hameed, Malik, Fawad…even Faisal Iqbal (yes, I said it!) should be ahead of Farhat.
July 16th, 2010 at 12:07 am
@Vim –
Yes Vim, their bowlers aren’t Steyn, but our batsmen are Pakistani!
July 16th, 2010 at 5:56 am
Stani
I saw him getting out and I guess we all knew that he will get out in similar fashion. I am glad that Azhar Ali is batting well and showing proper technique and temprament, the conditions were easy today than the previous days, tommorrow it is going to be windy and cloudy the ball will start swinging again, if Azhar and Salman each score a big innings then we do have a chance, there is no possibility of a draw as too much time is left.
Hopefully Umar Akmal and Umar Amin will also score some runs, Amin if he gets going he is as exciting as Umar Akmal with the bat.
Lets not get carried away hopefully the team will not fold easily and will fight till end.
Roamer
Even though I don’t like Farhat and would have preferred Fawad over him if there was a choice given to me but honestly given Fawad’s past record he would have also scored a 20 or a 30 nothing more. I hope they drop Farhat in the next match and play Hameed or Malik instead.
Fawad deserved to be in Pakistan A, I agree with you, but you have ignored the fact that he is currently in England and is a part of the T20 and Odi team which is due to play against England after the current series. So maybe it wasn’t possible for him to leave England right now.
July 16th, 2010 at 8:43 am
@Stani …. here is the link of Afridi interview http://gulfnews.com/sport/cricket/mediocrity-not-an-option-afridi-says-1.655002 …. this was given after the first day’s play (not sure where I read this interview earlier).
@Wasim …. another goofup from our selectors, how can they retain him for ODI and T20′s, because T20 and ODI squad is not announced yet, and even he has to play in them then these matches will start from 5th of September, so for two months they will keep Fawad in the squad to do what? carry drinks or towels?!?! …. this is what you expect from idiot and politically supported chairman of PCB and his team.
Seriously a person with our knowledge about cricket can do a better job than them.
July 16th, 2010 at 8:46 am
As for this test match, first half an hour will be very important … if Pakistan donot loose any wicket then they have a chance to fightand as rightly pointed out by kamran abbassi that we dont expect a win from them but what we do expect is that if they go down they should give it a fight like they did last evening.
July 16th, 2010 at 12:34 pm
Lunch:216/4…. further 224 required!
Looks like where now going to let Marcus North get a 5 for too!!!!
July 16th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
Yes Maaz our batsmen have picked North this time as the lucky guy to shower their generosity.
Expect the same nonsense from Afridi and Akmal and the match will be over by tea.
July 16th, 2010 at 3:04 pm
What a pathetic and thoughtless batting performance from Pakistan! It just was embarrassing and idiotic at times. Aamer is not a Test no 8 batsmen at all and the tail is unarguably one of the worst in world cricket. And Marcus North takes 5 wickets… good lord what is wrong with our team is something serious!
The Akmal brothers need to bat with much more responsibility in the future… today they were both helpless… extremely disappointing stuff
we need more “mature” players!
July 16th, 2010 at 3:52 pm
Do we really need mature players! We just have trashed Younis and Yousuf. Next test will prove If Malik or Yasir are the mature ones!
Please read the David Dwyer recent interview and he named Gul, Fawad and Younis as the best on Fitness levels specially Fawad (25) and Younis(33) whom he said can run forever!
Read what Micheal Hussey said recently regarding Yousuf and specially Younis. Read Cricinfo stats for incredible middle order we had for past 5 years which out scored other nations. Positions of 3~5 (Younis, Yousuf and Inzi). We all know what inzi was doing in last 2 years of his play and it was only Yousuf and specially Younis who were the main stay.
Still we think Younis cant see and middle ? There was some one admiring AFRIDI’s form or expecting much of the role he will be playing in test eleven. There are many who still have praises for his firts innings knock and what about the second one ? The Captain should be a role model and lead from front. That’s what Afridi can do best in T20s and Satisfactorily (in absence of any other option) in ODIs but he tried to lead from the back and we see what happened! He came up with T20 figues in a TEST match in both batting and bowling.
Beleive it or not! Our team needs Younis badly if not be as a captain (which would have been the best for Pakistan Cricket) then as a key member.
Any doubts, those will be clear after next test and my point will make more headlines then!
July 16th, 2010 at 6:48 pm
@Roamer –
You are right, people without knowledge of cricket can do a better job than them but these lot don’t always select on cricketing aspects as the selection of Farhat has proved.
July 16th, 2010 at 6:49 pm
@Wasim –
Correct!
July 16th, 2010 at 6:49 pm
@Maaaaaaaz –
I know its hard but we cannot blame the tail. Our bowlers always do their share of the work. Completely agree in regards to the Akmals and the general maturity of our players.
July 16th, 2010 at 6:50 pm
@Riaz –
I’m getting the sense that whatever happens, the PCB will not go back to Yousuf and Younis.
July 16th, 2010 at 8:03 pm
You are 50% right. They (Ejaz Butt) will never call Younis as long as he do not apologise for speaking truth and asking for OPEN MEDIA TRIAL and proofs of alleged charges on him.
For your info: Read Geo website. Yousuf is coming back in second test.
July 16th, 2010 at 9:44 pm
Chocolate is all people can think of when hearing of Belgium. At the least the tiny speck of land got itself famous in something.
But wait, did I tell you cricket was invented in Belgium? I think I should start a campaing to circulate this truth and add to to the country’s fame.
July 17th, 2010 at 10:46 am
TJ
I partly agree that its not their main job obviously but one would expect some effort and contribution from them from time to time and attempt to frustrate the opposition like Ben Hilfenhaus did. They should have the basics of a decent defence and game awareness at least, but they are so damn useless that they don’t even have that. I mean Aamer has to improve his batting, no 8 is an important position and that dismissal yesterday was the height of stupidity.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:06 pm
@Riaz –
Interesting development. Don’t know if he’ll be able to make it for the second Test but should be good for the Tests against England.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:06 pm
@sunny –
….and waffles? No! Cricket was invented in Pakistan!….well it should have been
July 17th, 2010 at 2:07 pm
@Maaaaaaaz –
I think Mr captain’s lack of responsibility does rub off on the youngsters. Umar played poor shots and so did Aamer. Possibly after watching the captain? Aamer is an adept batsmen. He mad 40-odd in the warm up tour game so I am sure he will come good.
July 17th, 2010 at 2:31 pm
Oh yeah…waffles! But those taste best in the winter, and our French fries are great as well! But how come you know so much about Belgium…suspicious…
No Stani, I can’t imagine what would have happened to the poor cricket if Pakistan had invented it.
July 17th, 2010 at 6:31 pm
@sunny –
Everyone would have been naturally talented had we invented it
I used to be Belgian in a previous life….. I think.
July 18th, 2010 at 8:23 am
In a previous life? You believe in karma or what?
Ain’t possible…
July 18th, 2010 at 10:10 am
@sunny –
No, but I thought I might get away with it as an explanation. I guess not
July 18th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
No, not with an intelligent person like me.
