Ponting Picks on an 18 Year Old

119 Views

As Mohammed Aamer dismissed Ricky Ponting on day one of the first Test at Lord’s, there was a coming together of the two players which may be brushed off as just nothing by some. But, here on Stani Army, it does rile us when the spirit of cricket is not upheld and especially in the MCC Spirit of Cricket series. The manner in which Shane Warne tried to justify Ponting’s actions on commentary was disgraceful but it was to be expected. Had it not been for the camera angle from behind Ponting, we would not have clearly seen Ponting put out his elbow as Aamer ran past. Then Ponting’s got the nerve to complain to the umpire when he walks off? Yet there is the old tactic of influencing the umpire, something which Shane Warne can tell you all about as influencing the umpire was one of his variations along with the leg-break, the top spinner and the flipper.

Ricky Ponting and Shane Watson demonstrate their childishness

Ponting was clearly frustrated at not being able to get bat on to ball as Aamer mesmerized, yet Ponting could learn a great deal from his vice-captain Michael Clarke, who clashed with Aamer in the 2nd Twenty20 but accepted Aamer’s apology with good grace. Whilst Ponting has built himself a certain reputation in cricket, there is a side to him that is not so immendiately obvious. Back in December 2009 when Chris Gayle and Shane Watson had their falling out, Ponting’s behaviour at the time was something that really surprised me coming from such a classy player. The clip below shows Watson dismissing Gayle and then behaving like a brat, but have a look at 15 seconds into the clip in the back ground at Pontings ‘celebration’ as he runs in from slip. Pathetic. Would you have seen Brian Lara or Sachin Tendulkar do such a thing?

We will wait to see if the match referre Chris Broard does somethig about it, but  knowing Broad, I wouldn’t hold my breath. A little bit of slap and tickle would suffice for the Aussies I’m sure. And consider the fact that asked a while back who his favourite cricketer was, Aamer replied Ricky Ponting. Shame on you Ponting.

    You’ve must have literally just posted this, because I was here not 2 minutes ago to see if you had written anything on today’s events and this was not here … were you waiting for me to leave, you scoundrel, you?

  2. Sid Says:

    Now, I didn’t see the Ponting elbow event but when I saw a little of it on the Sky montage at the end of day’s play, it looked like nothing. What exactly was he complaining about? Or was he just being Punter?

    A friend and I have a theory that these could be the last tests we see Ponting play on English soil, so perhaps he is feeling like he needs to score big more than ever. Maybe this isn’t helping the temper.

    Will you be visiting Lord’s or Headers, Stani?

    @Sid
    How does one accuse one of such a heinous crime?! Liar liar, bum’s on fire! I posted this during the afternoon Sid, I swear! You probably didn’t hit the refresh key….everyone knows this site’s set as your homepage because you just can’t get enough of us Stanis.

    No, seriously, I posted before the end of the game….either that or I was keeping up with the panto thing you got going on over at yours :)

    Stop defending him Sid :( You know I call them how I see them and Ponting did not do himself any good. Clarke for captain! Now I see why you have his image as your site’s header. Top bloke. I agree with you in regards to the fact that Ricky’s feeling jittery. The main reason though is not only because it’s his last Tests in England but because he, for all the great things he has achieved in cricket, has not been on the honours board at Lord’s. He’s not even got a 50 here I think.

    Did get some tickets but they’re for the games against England. Could always pop along for the remainder of the four days here though as it does look like we will make a game of it thank God. I am assuming our batsmen do something decent. I fear Hilfenhaus.

    Aamer should be a bit careful here he has a habit of running into a player after getting his wicket.

    I think he deserved the elbow here, I don’t think any thing will happen, both players might get a warning.

  5. sunny Says:

    I wasn’t able to see the elbow incident, isn’t there a video available of it?

    But what a great thing that the Stanis have managed to get the Aussie batting order to collapse. I wasn’t expecting it early on, but Aamer and Asif are just brilliant. Couldn’t they lend some of their brilliance to the Stani batsmen for a while?

    Where is Ponting in the video actually? With Watto screaming and dancing like a kindergarten student, it’s hard to notice him.
    And in the picture he seems to be yelling “MAMMAAAAA!!! Chris whacked me with his bat!!” :)

    I agree with Wasim to an extent Aamer got what he deserved and he must learn not to get into the batsmen’s way in his celebration routine and instead control his emotions and take them away from the way the batsmen is walking. Nonetheless, one would expect better from Ponting, disgraceful behaviour as well it must be said.

    We must not get ahead of ourselves folks as of yet, but the bowling in the last session was exceptional and has provided us with a really good opportunity in this match, hopefully this time we will make full use of it and consolidate on the superb platform that has been set. However, we all know how good Australia are at making the unthinkable a true possibility and how they can turn the tables with their self belief and fighting spirit.

  7. TJ for Stani Army Says:

    @Wasim
    Almost every bowler runs down the wicket towards the keeper after dismissing a batsmen Wasim. Sledging, staring etc is fine, but intentional physical contact is going too far and Ponting should be reprimanded.

  8. TJ for Stani Army Says:

    @sunny
    The incident may appear on youtube in a few days but I can’t find it at the moment. Ponting’s behind the stumps in the Gayle clip trying to crack a walnut between his cheeks.

    I think our batsmen should bore the Australian bowlers to death. When the ball gets old they can accelerate. They should look to only have to bat once. Kiss of death?

  9. TJ for Stani Army Says:

    @Maaaaaaaz
    You cannot elbow an opponent Maz, this is cricket not rugby! Whatever Aamer did wrong it cannot be compared to, or used to exonerate Ponting’s actions. We should also consider that Aamer is a teenager and Ponting has been around for ages so should behave accordingly.

  10. Sid Says:

    OK, Stani – you have really offended me now! Don’t you ever EVER accuse me of defending Ponting. That really hurts.

    :-)

    When I said it looked liked nothing, I meant the situation that lead to the elbowing and when I said “what was he complaining about?” I meant what was Ponting complaining about.

    Maybe you’re right about his Lord’s record, actually. And today won’t help things – he went for a duck. oh dear …

  11. Mudassar @ CricketVibe.com Says:

    @Stani, I also thought there must be a post on Stani about that and here I have two as I checked late but Broad action really annoyed he could have easily a word with Pointing too but probably he is senior statsmen only kids need some training of ethics.

    @Sid, so we should expect more arrogance from Punter in next match as he had a duck today and lost his probably last chance at Lords.

    @Wasim, you are right, but looks like Amir was actually trying to avoid Punter so that he doesn’t collide with him like Clarke but he shouldn’t have got that close to a batsmen he just got out :P

    The most awful thing about all was not what happened, it was the way Pointing continued complaining about it on his way back to everyone and I am sure he did had it repeated a lot later in the day. And this is a behavior of a looser, he could have easily ignore it.

  12. Sid Says:

    Well, that depends Mudassar – can Ponting get more arrogant?

    Stani, what happened to the “all arse and no class” comment? Don’t you be all insulting my Aussie-ness, young man :-)

  13. TJ for Stani Army Says:

    @Sid
    Oh dear? Rejoice Sid! Justice has been served. Ponting will have to play on until he’s old and grey to get on the honours board at Lord’s. Not that it means anything now that Shane Watson has devalued it by getting on there. Expect the Stanis to give a 80mph talentless dibbly-dobbler a 5-for!?

    Me insulting? Where? You mean the first comment? That’s hardly me Sidney! Don’t worry, I’ll see to that…… young lady.

  14. TJ for Stani Army Says:

    @Mudassar @ CricketVibe.com
    I may be bias but it seems blatantly incorrect to me. The guy that made the physical contact gets away with it. Clarke showed much more class than him.

  15. Wasim Says:

    Stani

    Agreed bowlers celebrate, stare, curse/sledge, but he literally jumped over Clarke the other day and just stopped short of jumping over Ponting, I think he should keep a safe distance, I don’t blame Ponting for elbowing him, if I was there I would have done the same. He is not completely innocent he asked for it, as regards double standards I agree with you and that is why I want him to be even more cautious.

  16. Vim Says:

    Storm in a teacup really. Punter is a big baby without the excuse of youthful exuberance that Aamer has. Aamer will learn not to run at the batsmen but Punter won’t learn a thing from this.

  17. TJ for Stani Army Says:

    @Vim
    Now why couldn’t I put it like that?

    You know why he won’t learn? Because he’s allowed to get away with it.
