Waqar The Commentator

If the recent Test series in Sri Lanka has left you depressed, here’s something to cheer you up. I received this email of some excerpts of commentary by the legend that is Waqar Younis. Have a read, it’s hilarious!

1) “Dhoni has got a beautiful head on his shoulders…..” – Waqar when praising Dhoni’s calm demeanour.
2) “The Virender Sehwag is really on the rampage tonight” – When praising Sehwag’s attacking batting.
3) “Oh…..he is a smart bowler! He has got a protection there” – When praising some bowler for field placing.
4) When Aamir Sohail praised Ishant Sharma saying, “Waqar, I think the reason that Ashant is getting all that extra bounce is that he is a big lanky lad” Waqar: “Another reason could be that he’s also very tall”
5) When praising Salman Butt, “All Salman did was just put bat on ball and timing was perfect. Beautiful play…….”
6) “Trescothick makes a room outside off stump”
7) “Definitely a nick there, I heard it in my ear”
8 ) “Danish gave an extra air to the ball”
9) “Jayasuria likes to have a room, but Najaf not giving him a room” – Jayasuria, trying to rent a room at Najaf’s hotel.
10) “Thats 200 wickets for Danish Kaneria. He’s the 6th Pakistani fast bowler to achieve this”
11) “What a catch…that’s an absolutely catch”
12) “Went on the back foot and found a beautiful gap between cover and point”
13) When the commentator Greg Blewett said, “That’s an ordinary effort by Razzaq” (when Razzaq misfielded), this is what Waqar had to say, “Oooo that’s worse than ordinary, that’s…………ordinary effort”
14) “And a Pakistan is 181 for.. all out”
15) “Beautifully Shot”
16) “The outfield is a lighting”
17) A boy in the crowd with an “I love you” banner for Shahid Afridi;
Dean Jones: “Now that´s bit gayish, isn´t it?”
Waqar Younis: “Not really Deano, there are lot of them in Pakistan.” – Waqar gives Pakistan’s gay community a reason to rejoice.
18) When Chibhabha came out to bat: “That’s Chim-bum-ba. Chibhumba. Sorry, Chibumbha. He’s a batsman for the Zimbabwean.
I remember he is a very good all-rounder. He once he took five wickets and made two runs.”

19) “If that ball hit the stumps, it would have been Salman Butt’s curtains”.

Baat samajh mein a jaye tu baqi sab theek hai.

Instead of looking for grammatical mistakes I only see how well a commentator gives his expert opinion on different aspects of the game. Wasim and Waqar get a lot of flak for their poor English but I haven’t seen any other commentator analyzing players and their technique better than them.

But those bloopers were quite funny.
    My favorite on was #4.
    Which one is yours?

    Wasim,
I agree with what you say. I’m particularly impressed with Wasim Akram’s analyses. Waqar’s English has improved a lot though.

Some of our players are still shocking and still possess the habit of putting ‘the’ before people’s names, e.g. ‘the Bob’, when referring to Bob Woolmer.

My favourite has to be 17! It’s classic humour and shows up Waqar’s innocence.

  3. Wasim Says:

When Vettori launched a complain that Gul was probably tempering the ball. In the next match the way Wasim described and predicted every move Gul was making was amazing I have seen that anyother commentator imparting that kind of knowledge while commentating.
Basically it was a 101 lesson on reverse swing not only that but also how a fast bowler in his first over tries to test the pitch.

Hi Stani. I would like to share my preferred side ahead of the forthcoming limited over’s series against Sri Lanka.

    Imran Nazir
    Kamran Akmal (WK)
    Younis Khan (C)
    Moahmmed Yousuf
    Malik
    Afridi
    Misbah
    Razzaq
    Rana Naved
    Umar Gul
    Saed Ajmal

Let me just highlight the immense depth in the batting department this side has if selected. Also Pakistan should certainly benefit from the inclusion of Imran Nazir and Rana Naved. Their experience, skill, speciality and uniqueness were greatly missed and should add some extra” spice” to the ODI outfit for sure. I’m confident of success in these shorter versions of the game with the return of these mouth-watering gifted prospects. I’ve been nagging on about their immense talent on various blogs for an age and how daft the PCB was to abandon their national participation at the expense of pleasing or more like being scared of the rules and regulation enforced by the ICC and BCCI (two boards which have expressed obvious biasness against Pakistan cricket). Anyhow now their back so I’m satisfied.

Stani, are u also following the current ashes series? It’s getting exciting times here in UK with ashes fever igniting the nation. I really back England’s chances this year after that Lords triumph. I also thoroughly enjoy watching the channel 5 highlights show. Great action of key moments, high class commentators and well structured analysis from Simon Hughes. Do u watch and rate the programme as well?

  5. Rayden Says:

    Absolutely Hilarious.

Its a bit insulting to all the great fast bowlers of Pakistan to club Danish Kaneria with them :-)

  6. TJ for Stani Army Says:

    Waim,
Absolutely, which is why we need him around for Aamer in particular, to pick his brains.

    Maz,
No Aamer? I see you have added Rana in place of him. I would keep Aamer as I think he’s earned his place. He needs to play now and get established. I would have Rana and Razzaq fighting for one spot but the rest of the team I agree with.

As for he Ashes, it’s going to be 1-2 to the Aussies. Pietersen is out and Flintoff will not make the end. Brett Lee will also be back for the 4th Test. The 5 highlights are something I guess for those not willing to pay for Sky’s monopoly (me included). BUT! I have to say that Simon Hughes is the most irritating, obnoxious and bias commentator/analyst in cricket. I also hate his shirts….or maybe it’s just the fact that it’s him wearing them.

    Rayden,
I’m glad it cheered you up. Maybe Waqar knows something about Danish that the rest of the world doesn’t!? Watch out for Dani boy’s quicker one batsmen around the world!

Shane Warne recently stated his thoughts on the future of international cricket. He felt that one day cricket is fading away as there is neither excitement nor technical assessment for one to express an interest let it be participating or viewing. Therefore he concluded that T20 and test formats hold the future.

I agree with his future vision. T20 produces a gripping nail biting contest and modernises the sport by bringing new skills and tactical strategies into the reckoning. However, test cricket shall still remain the ultimate assessment in which we can convincingly consider a deserved result due to a larger course of play, in the view that usually the winning side is dominating proceedings for a lustrous period of time and therefore subsequently are the better side.

    Maz

Are you sure about the Channel 5 coverage?

Mark Nicholas – The first man to accuse Pakistan of ball tampering when we came to England in 1992 when we played Hampshire.

Simon Hughes – An imbecile who cannot hide his bias. But great at stating the obvious and talking crap.

Boycott – Was good, but now says Pietersen is better than Ponting? Has lost the plot and should be sent to an OAP’s home.

  9. TJ for Stani Army Says:

    Maz,
I think 50 over 0DIs will be around for some time yet. I believe they still provide a test which neither t20 or Test cricket can offer. In the immediate future, I think if any form will suffer it will be t20. I’m not saying it will cease to exist, merely it will be played less.

    Jack,
Very true. I also noticed how Nicholas enjoys thrusting his head up the Aussie’s behinds….with some vigour I might add.
